Last week I was running low on gas and a few days shy of payday and had to do whatever I could to conserve gas. In the case of last week the main thing that I did was stop driving like I’m in NASCAR and started to drive slower around town. While I was driving slow I really began to pay attention to the details around me and it really made me think about how much we miss in life when we have sights set on something and we go after it at mach speeds. While there’s nothing wrong with having laser focus, sometimes we can miss out on a lot of wonderful things around us because we’re not “driving” slow enough to appreciate the beauty, and uniqueness of our surroundings and the people that we wouldn’t normally pay attention to.
So instead of always “living life in the fast lane”, sometimes we should just drive slow and appreciate the journey. Isn’t it funny how something so simple as driving slow can teach you so much more about life!
New beginnings have a tendency to bring hope, new joy, and new optimism to a person who is starting something fresh. New beginnings can also cause someone to feel the very opposite depending on what it is they are starting anew from. For me, I’m in a period of new beginning in which I am not only reconnecting to who I am but why I am. Now that may sound strange, but knowing who you are is only 1 part of the puzzle in living a fulfilling life, a life in which you can live your dreams and goals with no hesitation or reservation. Another part is knowing why you are the way you are. For me, my why is deeply connected to my beliefs as a Christian that God has placed me here to fulfill a purpose based on the unique gifts and abilities that I’ve been given and have chosen to develop further.
It is never too late to begin anew but (in my opinion), I don’t believe that it’s a good thing to constantly have multiple new beginnings as that may be more of an indicator of a person who doesn’t know who they are; what they want; or gives up on themselves way too easily. Any time you go through a period of new beginning, you must make sure that you have the support that you need to get through it and reach the end result, the achievement of your dream. I’m learning more and more each day how truly important it really is to have the support specific to your needs. Part of this new beginning for me that I will share with all of you today is that I’m beginning something that I originally came to New England to do 11 years ago and never started until now. I’m getting my Master’s Degree. This is a big thing for me, because I gave up on this degree and dream once, at a time in which I forgot who I really am, but not anymore. This goes to show you that I really am practicing what I’m writing when I say it’s NEVER TOO LATE TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS.
What new beginning are you venturing out on? Please share with me either via comments, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Have you ever felt like it’s time to give up? Like you’ll never accomplish all that you truly want to accomplish? Yeah, I’ve been there as well. Sometimes what we are missing is a lack of information. I read the quote below that really made me think this morning about some of my past and current frustrations with achieving goals:
- The difference between today and your future is information. If you don’t learn anything new today, tomorrow will be just like today. This means you don’t have a future…just a longer today. -Dr. Mike Murdock
- The difference between today (what you are thinking about trying to do to achieve your dreams and goals) and your future (your desired end result) is information (any knowledge, circumstance, or experience that you gain that allows you to go from thinking about what you are trying to achieve to actually achieving it). If you don’t learn anything new today (any knowledge, circumstance, or experience that you gain that allows you to go from thinking about what you are trying to achieve to actually achieving it), tomorrow (your desired end result) will be just like today (just a thought and not an actual achievement). This means you don’t have a future (your desired end result)…just a longer today (a thought that turns into a daydream afar off that then becomes a what if which morphs into a regret, which settles into misery and despair)” -Dr. Mike Murdock (with my definitions in paraphrase).
8 years ago, my mom died due to complications from ovarian cancer and I find myself thinking about her and missing her today. My mom’s birthday passed last week and with all that’s been going on in my life lately I find myself thinking and missing her. So for those who have lost their mom and are missing her, I know what you may be feeling and I sympathize with you.
Today has been one of those days in which I have been ready to go crazy! From the time that I left my house this morning for work to leaving to come home, I have felt like I was losing my mind and quite honestly there’s a very good reason for that. The reason is because I haven’t been maintaining my balance. Your balance is highly important to you being the best that you can be. The reason why I’ve highlighted and underlined the my and your is because what causes me to be balanced will most definitely be different than you, and this balance that I’m speaking of doesn’t mean that everything is okay in your world, it just means that you as a person are doing okay. When you lose your state (not sense) of being balanced, you may find that just about anything becomes irritating, annoying, or has the ability to set you off.
I can tell you 1st hand that this is not a good place to be in, but at the same time, some good can come out of it. The good that can come out of it is that you realize that something is wrong, find that you need to do something about, and that you take action to fix the situation. The million dollar question (at least the one I would ask if I were reading this) is what do you need to do to achieve your balance? That varies from person to person. For some, it’s meditation. For others it could be listening to music, watching a movie. Yet for others, it can be physical activity. And yet for even more people, it’s usually a combination of all or none of these things. But there’s usually a combination of things that help a person achieve their own personal balance.
Once you discover what it is, you will be able to regain control of your attitude that tends to shift from time to time when things are out of balance!
